Many people consider “Snake” to be the first app. It was included on Nokia phones as far back as 1997. But everything changed in 20008 when the App Store was introduced. Almost overnight, 500 different apps were available for download on devices across the world.
In 2009, Apple ran a commercial that said, “There’s an app for that,” and in 2010, the word “App” was voted to be the Word of the Year. Since then, there have been no signs of slowing down. Apps are everywhere.
There’s no doubt that apps have changed the game with how we access information and entertainment, but what about spiritual growth. Can apps help us develop our relationship with Christ?
While some apps can be a colossal waste of time, others can really be helpful and even contribute to our spiritual growth.
In this post, I want to share 5 of the apps that are helping me grow in my relationship with Christ right now. My hope is that you’ll download one of them and be helped too.
5 Apps That are Helping Me Grow in My Relationship with Christ Right Now
1. Churchome
I first heard about this app when Justin Bieber posted about it on Instagram. I admit that I was skeptical at first, but as I’ve continued to engage with it, it’s won me over. The guided prayers from Judah Smith and his wife are fantastic, and I do them with my own kids every morning.
2. Pause from John Eldredge
This app is simple and beautiful. When you enable the push notifications, it alerts you throughout the day to pause. When you do, John gives you a couple of affirmations that remind you that God is in charge. These affirmations keep you centered on Christ and then leave you to go on with your day. It’s a great reminder that God is with you and for you as you’re going about your work.
3. The Bible Project: Read Scripture
This app is great because broken the storyline of Scripture into small, understandable units. They’ve also organized them into digestible parts that help new Christians make sense of Scripture and older Christians remember it.
4. Dwell
That is a Scripture app that is like an audio Bible on steroids. They’ve organized different listening plans and have different narrators who appeal to every ear. Listening to the verses of Scripture being read when I lie down and when I wake up has been an enriching experience, for sure.
5. Audible
There are so many good Christian books available on Audible, and I’ve been listening to them as I go on walks throughout the day. I’ve already listened to 3 books so far this year, and my faith has been strengthened because of it.
Your Move
The most important thing a youth pastor can do is maintain his or her relationship with Christ. These apps will help you do that. Pick one, download it, and let it help you today.
